Capital Spreads was launched as a financial spread betting site in late 2003. Their platform has been designed to give users a fresh new perspective on spread trading. The company prides itself on being an excellent value platform, and has some of the best available margins of the entire industry.

Trading Market

There are a generous amount of products that can be spread bet on at Capital spreads, from major indices and commodities, to individual shares and interest rates. The commodities selection is particularly expansive. You can of course place a spread bet on typical commodities such as metals and oil, but you can also trade on less expected items including orange juice and cotton.

Betting Platforms

Spread trading at Capital Spreads can be done via the website, without need for downloads of any kind. Alternatively you can keep with your spread betting account by logging on to its mobile platform through either an iPhone or Android device. By using a mobile account you can track the latest movements in the market and also find out the most recent prices. You can also initiate orders and stop losses. These platforms are great on the move, but only offer a fraction of the functionality of the HTML platform. If you are new to spread betting, you can start with a free demo account instead. You’ll enjoy the same functionality of the platform, and are able to trade on live products, all without the fear of losing any cash. Of course you won’t be able to make any money using the simulated trading platform either.

Benefits

Although Capital Spreads is an impressive site, there aren’t many incentives in place to get you to join. In fact, the site currently only has one offer in place – a £100 refer a friend scheme, but it’s not a simple way to earn an extra £100 for you and a friend. To qualify you need to both deposit £250 into your respective accounts and make five opening non equity trades; after you’ve done that you’ll have to wait three months before you can withdraw the money. It isn’t the most special of offers.

The site’s trading screen is visually fantastic. Using a split screen layout, you can check through all available markets for spread trading, whilst still viewing your open positions, trade history and account transactions. You can also resize the split screen windows to give more space to the aspect of the trade that you are focusing on. Unlike some other spread trading platforms, account set up is really straightforward here too – your account can be up and running within ten minutes.

Special Offers

Capital Spreads education programme can be unlocked once you have deposited £100 into your spread betting account. Once it’s been enabled you’ll have access to an expansive range of interactive tutorials, videos, user manuals, seminars and webinars. The educational provisions are one of the site’s greatest strengths, and really add to the user’s spread betting experience. The ability to request a product to spread trade on is another particularly interesting addition to the site. Capital Spreads have really tapped into an area of the market that spread traders have been waiting for.

Site Strengths

  • Quick account openings.
  • The trading screen.

Site Weaknesses

  • The current limited special offers.

Conclusion

Seasoned spread traders may be unimpressed by the numerous incentive offers that rival spread betting platforms seem to continually offer, but I’m sure even they would be equally unimpressed by what is on offer here. Although the margins are relatively low and their product portfolio is impressive, if they want to remain as one of the UK’s most popular trading sites they’ll need to offer their accounts holders more than a limited refer a friend scheme. However, regardless of these minor faults, it’s easy to see why Capital Spreads was named as the Best Spread Betting Provider of the year in 2009.
